The Deerfield River- my home water- is one of the best trout fisheries in New England, and as a tailwater, offers year- round angling opportunities. The cold water from reservoirs in it’s headwaters helps prolong the fishing well into the dog days of summer when other fisheries have diminished. Hatches never reach the “blizzard” levels of waters to the west in the Catskills, however they are consistent, and terrestrial fishing in the summer months can be outstanding, particularly from late June through July and sometimes right through to September. The Deerfield is also known for it’s populations of wild fish-indigenous brook trout, wild rainbows, and oversized wild browns-some exceeding 10 lbs. This river should be on every anglers bucket list.
